Blu Energy XL Phablet Review – New Phone With Huge Screen & Good Battery Life?

BLU Energy XL Phablet Review

BLU just announced its new 6-inch Android smartphone, the Energy XL. If you’re looking for a new phablet, then the BLU Energy XL may be the right choice for you. Here’s our review.

About BLU Energy XL Phablet

BLU announced the Energy XL in a press release, where we learned pretty much everything we need to know about the phone, its tech specs, and its pricing.

Tech Specs

The Energy XL comes with a 6-inch AMOLED display with 1080×1920 full HD resolution protected by a layer of curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The phablet is powered by a MediaTek MT6753 octa-core chipset clocked at 1.3GHz. It uses the Mali-T720 GPU.

We also get 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. You can expand that internal storage with a memory card slot as well, which lets you insert a microSD card up to 32GB in size.

One nice camera feature is the addition of a dedicated camera button, which is almost a necessity when you’re using 6 inch phone. That camera is capable of shooting 1080p HD video footage at 30fps.

Meanwhile, the front-facing camera is 5MP and comes with an LED flash – something we don’t see on a lot of front-facing cameras. There’s also an 84 degree wide angle lens that promises to be ideal for selfies.

Meanwhile, for selfies, the Energy XL comes with a wide-angle 5MP front-facing camera along with customized face beautification software – similar to Samsung’s “Beauty” filter.

In terms of connectivity, the BLU Energy XL uses Bluetooth 4.0, FM Radio, USB Type-C 2.0, 4G LTE (with VoLTE support), Wi-Fi b/g/n, and GPS with A-GPS

Perhaps the most surprising tech spec on the phablet is the 5,000mAh battery, which is larger than virtually any other battery in the smartphone world today. Better yet, that battery comes with fast charging technology. BLU claims the fast charging technology will charge the battery from 0 to 43% in just 30 minutes.

Finally, a fingerprint scanner is hidden inside the physical home button on the front of the device.

Dimensions and Materials

The Energy XL is made from aircraft-grade aluminum with a color-coated curve display and polished accent chamfer edges.

Despite the enormous 6 inch screen and 5,000 mAh battery, the phone is surprisingly thin at 8.4mm. It weighs 208 grams and has dimensions of 160.9×81.2×8.4mm.

BLU will upgrade the Energy XL phablet to Marshmallow before the end of year. However, it ships with Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Energy XL Pricing

The BLU Energy XL phablet is priced at $299.99 for the unlocked version, which is currently available through Amazon.com.

Based on the tech specs above, you can expect the phablet to be priced in the middle range of the spectrum, and that’s exactly where we find it. After all, it doesn’t feature a 1440p screen: it features a full HD screen.

You can buy the Energy XL in Solid Gold or White-Silver color options.

As an unlocked phone, the Energy XL will work with most GSM carriers in the United States.
