360 degree video cameras are the hottest new tech trend of 2017 – and now GoPro is jumping on the bandwagon.
Find out everything you need to know about their Fusion 360 Degree Video Camera today.
What Is GoPro Fusion 360 Degree Video Camera?
The Fusion is a 360 degree camera that’s essentially a “fusion” of six different GoPro cameras into one unit. GoPro is expected to release the camera before the end of 2017.
The action camera company teased the camera in a recent blog post.
In that post, Jess Foley, GoPro Senior Product Manager of Spherical Solutions, described Fusion as “the ultimate capture device for fully immersive virtual reality content, non-VR video, and even photos”.
Like other 360 degree cameras on the market, Fusion will use multi-directional cameras to capture action in all 360 degrees around your body. The footage can be used to create VR content or non-VR video.
Starting on April 20, GoPro was accepting invitations into its pilot program, which is expected to roll out during the summer of 2017.
To get an idea of how GoPro’s Fusion will capture video, check out their introductory video on YouTube.
That video might look like an ordinary YouTube clip – until you realize you can drag the footage around, letting you scan the video and view new details every time. That entire video was filmed with the GoPro Fusion camera.
GoPro Fusion 360 Degree Video Camera Features
We don’t know full details about Fusion thus far.
However, here are some of the things we know about it:
- It captures 5.2K30 video in full spherical
- Uses OverCapture to record moments in all directions, letting you adjust the focus after filming has taken place; in post-production, you can create your own story using VR footage you’ve already captured
- The camera will be high-quality, mountable, and durable like other GoPros, while still being pocketable
GoPro Fusion 360 Degree Video Camera Release Date
GoPro doesn’t have a fixed release date for the Fusion at this time. However, they’ve announced plans for a limited commercial release of Fusion by the end of 2017.
Pricing details and other specifics will be provided closer to launch.
For perspective, today’s latest GoPro cameras typically retail between $400 and $600.
GoPro Fusion 360 Degree Video Camera Pilot Program
GoPro is accepting applicants to its Fusion pilot program through its official website.
The application form asks basic questions – like your contact information, location, and experience with 360 degree cameras.
If you’re accepted into the program, GoPro will contact you for more information.
It’s unclear what kind of applicants GoPro is looking for. However, it’s a safe bet to assume GoPro wants you to have experience with 360 degree cameras.
GoPro is only accepting applicants from brands, agencies, and content creation professionals (“Organization” is a required entry on the Fusion application form – so applications aren’t open to just anyone).
GoPro Fusion 360 Degree Video Camera Conclusion
Overall, Fusion comes with the tagline that it lets you “Relive Reality”. By capturing 360 degree images, then letting you edit those images in post-processing, Fusion can change the way we capture the world around us.
