DIY Smart Saw Review
The DIY Smart Saw is a woodworking guide that teaches anyone how to make their own “smart saw” at home. The guide was put together by a woodworker who wants to share his craft with the world. Here’s our review.
What Is DIY Smart Saw?
DIY Smart Saw is a downloadable eBook that teaches you how to make a “CNC Machine” or “smart saw” at home for under $500. The guide includes step-by-step instructions and pictures telling you how to make your own saw – including the materials you need to pick up from the store and how to put those materials together.
The guide is targeted towards beginner woodworkers. Even if you’ve never put something together by hand once in your life, you should still be able to figure out how to put together the DIY Smart Saw.
In fact, the creator of the program claims that “you’re not even going to rewind the video” to check if you’re doing it right: the video holds your hand through the entire building process. It’s also accompanied by pictures and text guides that fully explain everything.
Now that you know what you’re paying for, let’s find out what exactly a “smart saw” is.
What Is A Smart Saw or CNC Machine?
The creator of DIY Smart Saw loves to talk about the woodworking creations he has made. His website is filled with pictures of extravagant hardwood flooring systems, creative birdhouses, multifunctional desks, and all sorts of other simple and complex creations.
He credits his woodworking prowess to something called a smart saw. That smart saw is the secret that lets you “turn any project you dream of into reality in a heart-beat.”
Does that sound like science fiction? Well it’s not: it’s a smart saw.
In this case, “smart saw” is used to refer to a CNC machine. CNC standards for computer numerical control. It’s basically just a saw that lets you plug in numbers and then carves a piece of wood according to your exact specifications. The machine moves exactly how you want it and your measurements are 100% accurate.
CNC machines, unfortunately, cost thousands of dollars. Even secondhand on eBay, you’re going to spend over $2,000 for a CNC machine. A brand new machine costs tens of thousands of dollars – if not more.
Fortunately, DIY Smart Saw is a CNC machine-like device that works “20 times faster than the human hand” and lets you create personalized, unique projects in a fraction of the time.
Best of all, Alex is going to teach you how to build a CNC machine in an afternoon using parts you can buy at any hardware store.
You need some basic tools to begin, including a tubular wrench, hammer, screwdriver, marker/pencil, Allen tool, tape measure, and a depth stop.
After you gather the materials, Alex teaches you how to build your DIY Smart Saw using a video guide and step-by-step instructions. You’re encouraged to watch the video once before proceeding through the program yourself by following along with the detailed imagery.
Once you’ve completed building the DIY Smart Saw, you connect it to your computer using a USB cable and then download designs onto the saw. All computers work with the CNC machine.
Once you’ve put everything together, Alex claims you’ll be building all types of unique DIY projects, home decorations, and furniture in no time at all. You’ll be saving thousands off the costs of your own home.
As a bonus, Alex even throws in an extra guide called 101 CNC Woodworking, which features all sorts of designs you can create using your smart saw.
In terms of cost, Alex claims he gathered all the parts for his CNC machine for $500. However, he has friends who paid $160 for all of the parts.
Who Wrote DIY Smart Saw?
DIY Smart Saw was created by a guy named Alex Grayson. Alex claims he works in the car industry as an engineer. He spent his life taking apart stuff in his house to see how it worked – like a toaster, fridge, any anything else he could get his hands on. Eventually, he took up woodworking, which leads us to where we are today.
The sales page and marketing for DIY Smart Saw is filled with pictures of DIY projects. Alex claims he has personally built all of the projects pictured on the page. He talks about how he built a brand new mailbox that his wife loved, for example, and then he posts a picture of that mailbox.
Unfortunately, when you search for many of these images on Google, you’ll find that they’ve previously been posted elsewhere on the internet. Many of the photos come from Reddit’s DIY section, for example, where they’ve been posted by many different users.
The same mailbox Alex claims to have created on his own, for example, can be found on Reddit here, where it was posted by a user name /u/tylergarner.
In other words, Alex appears to have stolen most of the work on his page from other parts of the internet. That’s a problem when you’re trying to convince people you’re an expert woodworker.
When you read the disclaimer on the official DIY Smart Saw website, you’ll learn that Alex Grayson is a pen-name for a content writer hired by Survivopedia.com, which appears to be the original author of the DIY Smart Saw guide.
In any case, it’s suspicious that “Alex” – or whatever the original author’s name may be – didn’t upload his own original images to the site. There are also no pictures of the CNC machine or smart saw in its final form.

Should You Use DIY Smart Saw to Start Building Magnificent Woodworking Creations?
DIY Smart Saw appears to simplify the process of building your own CNC machine: these are complicated pieces of machinery that may take you several days – and several hundred dollars – to build. If you’re not good with your hands, or not good at following instructions, then you could get lost along the way. Some people will find it easier to just buy their own CNC machine for a few thousand dollars.
If you’re interested in woodworking and want to discover how to make your own magnificent creations, then the DIY Smart Saw guide may be what you need to get the ball rolling. However, if you’re not ready to put in hard work, then you’re not going to get much of a reward from this guide.
