Zevo Insect Killer Review: Instant Bio-Selective Insecticide Bug Spray?

Zevo is an instant action insect killing spray that is bio-selective towards a bug's nervous system, making the insecticide effective towards ants, roaches, fruit flies, gnats, spiders and crickets.

Zevo is a bug killing system that claims to kill insects without harmful chemicals. You can buy Zevo online through ZevoInsect.com. It’s also available through Target and Home Depot.

The insect killing system consists of essential oil sprays and heat-activated traps. The sprays kill insects on application, while the traps attract insects to the adhesive backing.

Does Zevo actually work? How does Zevo kill ants, roaches, and flies? What are the ingredients inside Zevo? Keep reading to discover everything you need to know about Zevo today.

What is Zevo?

Zevo describes itself as an instant action insect killer that is “bio selective”, which means it only kills ants, roaches, flies, and certain other insects.

Instead of using chemicals or insecticides, Zevo uses an ingredient we don’t typically see in the insect-killing space: essential oils. Zevo is made by household product giant Procter & Gamble.

You can buy Zevo online for $7 per bottle. It’s also available in the cleaning section at Target and home Depot. In recent weeks, P&G has marketed Zevo through “As Seen On TV” style advertisements.

Zevo works by targeting nervous system receptors that are vital to insects but not to people and pets. That means the spray kills insects while leaving pets and humans unharmed.

There are multiple types of Zevo spray. There’s the original Zevo insect spray, which claims to target all insects. You can also buy Zevo for specific insects. One version of Zevo targets flies, gnats, and fruit flies, for example, while another targets wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets.

How Does Zevo Work?

Zevo claims to use a bio-selective insecticide system that targets the nervous systems of insects without impacting people or pets.

Unlike other insecticide sprays, Zevo does not contain imiprothrin, cypermethrin pyrethroids, butane, or propane. P&G also claims the formula works with no harsh chemical odors.

So how exactly does Zevo work? Zevo works using a blend of essential oils, including lemongrass and cinnamon oil. These essential oils, according to the official website, “kill bugs, guaranteed”.

Zevo claims their formula is safe and effective for use anywhere in the house. You can use it in outdoor environments like the deck, backyard, or garage, for example. You can also use it in bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and more.

As proof their formula works as advertised, Zevo shares this video showing roaches dying after being exposed to the essential oil spray. The spray purportedly targets the nerve receptors of insects, killing them without harming people or pets.

Here’s how each ingredient in Zevo works:

Essential Oils:

Zevo uses cinnamon oil, lemongrass oil, and geraniol. P&G claims cinnamon oil is a natural deterrent for ants and other insects, while lemongrass oil “is deadly to insects when used in combination with our other ingredients”, according to the official website. P&G also claims (vaguely), that geraniol “provides insect-killing properties to our products”. Overall, there’s limited evidence that any of these essential oils will harm insects as effectively as insecticides. Some insects may be deterred by the scent, while other insects may actually be attracted to the scent. It seems more likely the other ingredients in Zevo (listed below) do most of the killing.

Mineral Oil:

Zevo also contains mineral oil, which is similar to petroleum jelly. Mineral oil helps penetrate the waxy layer that protects insects, allowing Zevo to quickly target nervous system receptors.

Vanillin:

Zevo includes vanillin, a natural food flavor derived from vanilla beans. P&G claims vanillin allows Zevo “to maintain its insect-killing properties for a longer time”.

Isopropyl Alcohol:

Zevo contains isopropyl alcohol (the primary ingredient in rubbing alcohol, which sanitizes the skin and kills insects while ensuring a consistent liquid formula.

Isopropyl Myristate:

Isopropyl myristate is a lubricant found in skincare products and sunscreens. P&G claims it helps the essential oils in Zevo stay uniformly dissolved.

Triethyl Citrate:

Triethyl citrate is derived from citrus fruits. In Zevo, it keeps essential oils in a uniform solution.

Butyl Lactate:

Zevo contains a food additive and cosmetic ingredient called butyl lactate, which purportedly keeps the essential oils uniformly dissolved.

Overall, P&G is surprisingly vague about how its ingredients work. The company claims the ingredients “target nervous system receptors” of insects, but that’s as much detail as we get.

How Does the Zevo Trap Work?

Zevo is best known for its sprays, but the company also recommends using its flying insect traps. The Zevo Trap is a flying insect defense system for your home.

The trap attracts and traps insects without chemical insecticides. It uses “multi-spectrum light technology and a body heat attractant”. This mimics the things that insects are attracted to – like warm objects. Flying insects head towards the trapped, then get trapped on the adhesive backing.

Each Zevo Trap cartridge offers continuous defense up to 45 days. After 45 days, the trap will be so filled with insects that there isn’t enough sticky surface remaining. At this point, you throw the cartridge into the garbage, then buy another cartridge.

How to Use Zevo

Zevo recommends a three step process for maximum insect killing effectiveness:

  • Step 1) Kill bugs with sprays, applying the spray directly to the bugs to kill them
  • Step 2) Use the Zevo traps to attract flying insects throughout the home
  • Step 3) Repeat to create the ultimate bug killing team

Zevo claims that its sprays “act like your sword” while the flying insect traps are “like your shield”. Using the products combined, you can effectively remove insects from your home.

Zevo Ingredients

Zevo uses a blend of essential oils and traditional insecticides to kill insects on application. The full list of ingredients includes:

Cinnamon oil, lemongrass oil, geraniol, mineral oil, vanillin, isopropyl alcohol, isopropyl myristate, triethyl citrate, and butyl lactate.

As you can see, Zevo puts a big emphasis on its essential oils, and the spray is advertised as an essential oil spray. However, Zevo contains solvents, food additives, and alcohol-based compounds similar to other natural insecticides.
