Identity Guard – Identity Theft Protection & Recovery Service?

Identity Guard is an online service that helps protect your identity online. The company recently started to offer a 30 day free trial. Read our Identity Guard review to see if it’s worth the price.

What is Identity Guard?

Identity Guard is an online service that promises to help you protect your identity. So far, the company claims to have protected the identities of more than 36 million customers.

In order to protect identities, Identity Guard mostly works from the back-end: you pay the company monthly, and it continuously scans databases and the internet for your personal information.

The idea is that Identity Guard will alert you as soon as it detects your information has been used in a fraudulent way.

Identity Guard also has a software program that prevents keyloggers from spying on your internet connection at Wi-Fi hotspots in public areas.

Once your 30 day free trial is over, Identity Guard will charge you $16.99 per month thereafter. You’ll need to cancel your trial if you want to avoid these ongoing fees.

How Does Identity Guard Work?

Identity Guard works by protecting your identity in five different ways, including:

-Credit: Identity Guard has ongoing scans looking for credit applications submitted in your name including retail credit cards, cell phone accounts, new mortgages, loans, etc. Part of this service also involves receiving 3-bureau credit reports and scores based on data from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

-Internet: Identity Guard’s internet scanners provide “ongoing surveillance of the internet’s financial black markets known to be frequented by identity thieves”. These scanners look for any times your SSN or payment information has been used on the black market.

-Computer: Identity Guard has a partnership with ZoneAlarm which means ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite is free for the life of your Identity Guard enrolment. You also get a software called PrivacyProtect that prevents keyloggers from stealing your information.

-On-the-Go: Identity Guard’s mobile protection includes receiving mobile notifications of changes to your public records or credit files. They also have keylogger protection, although that’s pretty much it for mobile protection.

-Recovery: If your identity is stolen while using Identity Guard, then Identity Guard will work with you to remediate the situation. The company has an identity theft recovery unit that guides you through the process. Part of that “process” involves customer service support from people “with access to credit education specialists.”

You control everything from the Identity Guard Dashboard, where you can see all your credit and identity details in one place (including your updated credit scores from the three reporting agencies). There’s also a messaging center where you can view the latest alerts, or check your credit history to make sure you understand and recognize all the times it’s been used.

Ultimately, these services promise to help you monitor, protect, and recover your identity for maximum protection in a digital age. Meanwhile, it protects customer data entered through its website using “the most advanced encryption technology” available.

Identity Guard 30 Day Free Trial

Identity Guard recently launched a 30 day free trial. That 30 day trial requires you to enter payment details and personal information. You can cancel at any time. After 30 days, your payment information will automatically be charged $16.99 per month.

Part of the free trial involves receiving 3 free credit scores from the three credit reporting agencies.

What’s the Difference Between Identity Guard and Other Identity Protection Services?

Up to this point, you can pretty much replace “Identity Guard” with “LifeLock” and it would still make sense. It’s true: Identity Guard is very similar to LifeLock and other identity protection services.

So what makes Identity Guard different? Well, the biggest difference is in their guarantees. Both LifeLock and Identity Guard make $1 million guarantees: if your identity is stolen while using either service, then the companies will spend up to $1 million remediating the situation.

The big difference here is that LifeLock’s guarantee isn’t quite as friendly as the Identity Guard guarantee. The Identity Guard guarantee covers you as long as the issue occurred while you were a paying member of the service, no matter what. Meanwhile, LifeLock’s guarantee comes with additional stipulations – like proving that LifeLock’s system failed to notify you or catch the issue.

It’s important to note, however, that LifeLock is cheaper than Identity Guard: their standard plan clocks in at $8.99 per month, while the cheapest Identity Guard plan is priced at $16.99 per month.

ASecureLife.com actually did a great comparison of the two services here, including a breakdown of the features offered by both services.

Should You Use Identity Guard to Protect your Identity Online?

Identity Guard claims that 13 million Americans suffer identity theft every year. Very few of these people ever thought they were going to be victims of identity theft. With Identity Guard, you can protect your identity online by paying someone to frequently scan the web for any unauthorized uses of your personal information.

It’s not a bulletproof system, and there’s a chance that certain crimes will slip through the cracks. When that occurs, Identity Guard has a famously-friendly customer service team (and a $1 million guarantee) to help you recover your identity and avoid any further damages. You also get regular credit reports from the big three agencies.

$17 per month may seem like a steep price to pay, although Identity Guard likes to remind you that identity theft can cost you millions.
