What Is The iScope?

The iScope is a unique flashlight that is made by Bell & Howell (not, as the name suggests, by Apple). The flashlight features an extendable head with a magnet at the end.

The idea behind the iScope is that you use the flashlight to find hard-to-reach objects and then use the magnetic head to grab onto those objects.

The flashlight itself comes with 3 white LEDs. It looks like a normal flashlight. But when you extend the flashlight to its full length, you’ll stretch it from its normal 6 inch length to its full 22 inch length.

The iScope is priced at around $29 for two flashlights or $15 for one. You can’t actually order just one flashlight from the official website, although you may be able to find the one flashlight offer on third party retailers like Amazon. To find out if the iScope is worth your hard-earned money, let’s take a closer look at its features.

iScope Features

the iScope comes with all of the following features:

  • Flashlight with 3 bright LEDs
  • Built-in clip
  • Extendable cord that reaches up to 22 inches
  • Magnetic head that can swivel 360 degrees
  • Aluminum case
  • Rear magnet that can be used to attach the flashlight to certain magnetic surfaces

The LEDs on the flashlight, according to the manufacturer, will provide over 100,000 hours of reliable light. Meanwhile, the magnets are strong enough to lift metal objects up to 2 pounds.

Why would you need a flashlight with a magnet on it? In a promotional video highlighting the flashlight, customers are seen taking the flashlight into all sorts of funny situations, like retrieving metallic objects from underneath the couch, using the flashlight as a work light by attaching it to your car, or recovering jewelry that fell down the drain.

If you frequently suffer from problems like this, then iScope may be the flashlight for you.

iScope Pricing

iScope, like many As Seen On TV-style products, comes with a unique and annoying pricing plan. You can’t buy just one single flashlight: the manufacturer forces you to buy two flashlights. There’s a standard version of the iScope as well as a deluxe version.

  • 2 iScope Flashlights: $28.85
  • 2 Deluxe iScope Flashlights: $40.85

The order form is also designed to be deliberately misleading. You’re asked “How many would you like?” on the ordering form, and given the option to choose a number between 1 and 5. You may think that you’re ordering 1 to 5 flashlights. But you’re ordering 1 to 5 sets of two flashlights each.

Making things worse is that the manufacturer doesn’t even give you a total price on the sales page: they force customers to do the math in their heads without ever providing a confirmation page before your purchase goes through on your credit card. That’s sleazy.

As if that wasn’t a big enough red flag, the refund policy also leaves something to be desired. You can receive a refund within 30 days of your purchase, although you won’t receive a refund on your shipping costs. Considering you pay $14 to $16 shipping on either order (along with the price you pay for return shipping), most people will decide that the refund isn’t worth the hassle. Obviously, the manufacturer knows this. Refund policies like this are rarely associated with high-quality products.

About Bell & Howell

Bell & Howell is a consumer electronics manufacturer that uses the same brand name as a motion picture equipment manufacturer founded in 1907. Today, the name of that brand is licensed out to a company that makes things like portable flashlights and ultrasonic insect repellers. That’s the company that makes iScope: not the famous motion picture equipment manufacturer.

You can contact the company by phone at 1-800-568-9392 between 8am and 8pm EST.

Should You Use iScope as Your Next Flashlight?

iScope is similar to many other As Seen On TV products on the market today. The manufacturer has taken a cheap object, forced you to buy multiple units at an inflated price, and then tacked on enormous shipping costs.

Do you really need an extendable flashlight? Maybe you do or maybe you don’t. I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the last time I dropped a metal object in a hard-to-reach spot and thought, “I just need a flashlight with a magnet to pick this up.”

If you do need an extendable flashlight with a magnet on the end, then iScope may be the best choice for you. Otherwise, there’s nothing too special about the iScope.
