Apple 2 Watch Review – Best Second Generation Smartwatch?

Apple Watch 2

The Apple Watch 2 is nearing release. Apple is reportedly making their second generation smartwatch “the game-changing device we’ve been waiting for” according to one early review.

What’s the big deal with the Apple Watch 2? Here are some of the most important things you need to know about the upcoming major release.

Apple Watch 2 Release Date

The Apple Watch 2 is rumored to be launching in September 2016 – although we don’t have an official release date as of yet.

The original Apple Watch launched in April 2015 to huge fanfare – but didn’t make as much of a splash as Apple had hoped. That original watch outsold the first year sales records set by the iPod and the iPhone, but it still wasn’t the enormous hit that Apple was hoping for.

With the Apple Watch 2, things could change. Apple’s second generation smartwatch will arrive in time for holiday season 2016, which should provide a nice sales boost.

There Will Be Significant Improvements Across the Board

apple-logoThe Apple Watch 2 will reportedly come with significant improvements “across the board” according to one early report.

Keep in mind that the watch is launching about 18 months after the original one hit store shelves – which is a lifetime in the tech world. There have been significant advances in the wearable industry since then, with Apple specifically doing a great job of stuffing more powerful hardware into smaller and smaller packages.

We’ve seen them do it increasingly well with their MacBooks and their alarmingly thin iPhones. Now, we’ll get to see what they can do with a smartwatch.

Some of the rumors on the Apple Watch 2 include:

-Built-in GPS functionality (the original Apple Watch just used your phone’s GPS signal, which is something we typically see on cheaper smartwatches at a much lower price range than the original Apple Watch)

-Improved waterproofing

-Barometric sensor

-Faster internals

-Improved battery life

-WatchOS 3

The GPS functionality is a big deal. The lack of GPS tracking made the original Apple Watch unappealing to fitness users. Typically, when you pay over $350 for a smartwatch, you expect built-in GPS tracking.

There Could Be a Facetime Camera

Get ready for a world of people staring at and speaking into their watches. There are rumors that the Apple Watch 2 will come with a FaceTime camera, letting you communicate with people directly from your watch. The camera would likely be similar to the front-facing camera currently seen on the iPhone. The inclusion of a high-quality camera will likely significantly increase the cost of the Apple Watch 2.

Expect Less of a Niche Product

The original Apple Watch filled a niche where it catered almost exclusively to techies.

The lack of GPS tracking and waterproofing made it a poor option for fitness tracking, and the high price point put it outside the range of the average user who was just curious about smartwatches.

With the Apple Watch 2, it’s expected that Apple will make it less of a niche product and more of a product that appeals to a wide range of people.

Remember: the iPod went through a similar process in the early 2000s. When it first launched, it didn’t make much of a splash and appealed mostly to Mac users. It took 2 to 3 years before the iPod became the massive smash hit that transformed Apple forever.

We’ll Learn More on September 7

Apple is likely holding a media event on September 7, launching the iPhone 7 a few days after that. The Apple Watch 2 would likely launch at around the same time as the iPhone 7.

In any case, Apple’s September event is likely where it’s first going to announce the Apple Watch 2 and expand on its features. We know pretty much nothing about the watch for sure – so this event will tell us everything we need to know.

We’ll keep you updated on the Apple Watch 2 as we get closer to the launch event!
