Hybeam Flashlight

Hybeam flashlight is a tactical, powerful flashlight.  If you're at all fascinated by military-grade gadgets that offer superior service then you may want to check it out.  I did, and this is what I found.

The Company

The Hybeam flashlight is sold by the Family Protection Association, or FPA for short.  This organization is a survivalist outfit run out of Austin, Texas.  They want to keep you prepared for anything in life, and they offer the tools and resources to that end. Let's talk about how it differentiates itself from top performing military-grade tactical flashlight, the Lumitact G700.

The FPA offers membership, too…the Hybeam flashlight is just to lure you in.  The reasoning here is: people who love MgGuyver-like survival tools like the Hybeam may also be interested in belonging to a survivalist group.  They've done this before in the past with Free Big Knife.

FPA Membership comes in two versions: $19.95 per month or $97 annually.  What do you get?  Both versions offer the same perks, but the annual term is a 66% savings over the month-to-month membership.

  • Podcast with FPA experts
  • Master video training courses (in survivalist/protection techniques)
  • Private Group Page
  • Weekly e-Newsletter
  • Lamplighter hat
  • Facebook Badge
  • Be the first to view new content
  • Free gift
  • Voting rights on the advisory board
  • Membership lapel pin
  • Event VIP status

There are a few other “perks” but they're sort of silly: a membership certificate and official membership cards.  Actually, strip away all the “prestige” perks and you're left with very little of value for this membership.

The FPA also offers a Home Survival Course.  Topics include things like “Alternative Energy” and “Self-Defense” and “Where Not to Store”.

There is also something called “Protein Power” on their website, and I'm going to assume it has something to do with surviving a natural disaster long-term.

Good thing the Hybeam flashlight is an awesome product.  Let's take a look at what we're really here for!

The Product

The Hybeam flashlight is actually pretty cool.  So cool in fact it's hard to believe it's free.  Well, free plus shipping.  The product website claims it's a $25 value, and comparable flashlights from other brands cost much more.

Gearheads beware: this will make you want to get one.  It's free, but the “catch” is that the FPA now has you contact info and they'll want to offer you more.  What, you're into survivalist gear?  Then all the better…go for it!

Designer/ inventor Dave Scoot is the chairman of the FPA and he thinks it's cool.  He tells us it's over 250 lumens, which he claims shines brighter than his high-powered headlamp.  Here's what he has to say about it:

  • waterproof thanks to its multiple O-ring seals (but not designed to be an underwater flashlight)
  • it only takes a single AA battery
  • 3 settings: bright (3-4 hours of burn), low (7 hours of burn), and a defensive strobe for stunning someone who sneaks up on you in the dark.
  • the ends are scalloped and sharp, meant for defense or for breaking glass windows…whatever your danger!

It features a CREE bulb, which is very bright.  And here's the cool part: it's made from aircraft grade aluminum…gearheads will revel in this fact, as it means it's incredibly durable.  Plus, when you go to use it as a “defense” tool it will really do some damage.

You wouldn't guess it, but this flashlight is also pretty light…it's that aircraft grade aluminum.  Of course: airplanes have to be tough and lightweight as possible.  This flashlight is also shock resistant.

There are only 573 of the Hybeam flashlights left because this is a limited edition flashlight.

The Verdict

The Hybeam Flashlight has a lot of schlocky hype around it, but the thing itself is pretty cool.  If you can find a way to deal with the FPA who will presumably bombard you with offers after you sign your life away getting this free cool flashlight, it might be worth it.

Plus you get a free book and survival course with your flashlight.  How much better could life really get? Oh, and “better hurry”…there are only a few hours left to claim one.
