Prior to launching Canaan Creative, he invented the first blockchain hardware mining technology.
Zhang created that technology by embedding software algorithms into FPGA hardware. He would later brand the products Icarus and Lancelot. The success of Icarus and Lancelot would lead him to found Canaan Creative in 2013.
Today, Canaan Creative is a 100 person strong and growing company headquartered in Beijing. The company’s full name is Canaan Creative Co. Ltd.
In 2016, Canaan Creative was acquired for approximately $466 million USD, making it one of the largest deals in the history of the bitcoin mining industry. The company was acquired by Chinese electronics company Shandong Luyitong (LYT) in a cash and stock deal.
The news came at a time when other major bitcoin mining operations were going bankrupt or winding down operations.
