Sterilize X UV Lamp Review: Ultraviolet Home Disinfection Sterilizer

0

Sterilize X is a home disinfection UV lamp that claims to protect your health using medical-grade ultraviolet technology.

The lamp also claims to kill 99% of surface bacteria. All you need to do is turn on the lamp, and the lamp will disinfect your entire room in just 30 minutes.

Ultraviolet light sanitizers are a popular and proven way to kill bacteria. But is there any evidence that Sterilize X works? Or is this another over-hyped product trying to take advantage of a pandemic? Let’s take a closer look at how Sterilize X works.

What is Sterilize X?

Sterilize X is an ultraviolet lamp that claims to disinfect an entire room in 30 minutes using ultraviolet light.

The lamp uses a rechargeable 700 mAh battery. It does not need to be plugged in. Just place the lamp in a room, and the lamp will sterilize the entire room.

The manufacturer of Sterilize X claims their lamp will kill 99% of surface bacteria using its medical grade ultraviolet light. By killing bacteria, you can reduce your chances of getting sick and remove germs from your home.

You can recharge Sterilize X at any time simply by plugging it in using a universal USB cable. It’s unclear how long the device lasts on a single charge.

Sterilize X Features and Benefits

The maker of Sterilize X makes bold claims about the product’s benefits. Some of the advertised benefits include:

  • Kill bacteria in 30 minutes
  • Remove bacteria without the use of chemicals
  • Medical-grade ultraviolet lamp
  • Kills 99% of surface bacteria
  • Reduces you and your family’s chances of getting sick
  • Medical grade product
  • Sterilizes using ultraviolet and ozone

How Does Sterilize X Work?

Sterilize X works using a three step process:

  • Step 1) Plug in Sterilize X using a universal USB cable
  • Step 2) Turn the device on and let it run for 30 minutes
  • Step 3) Sterilize X sterilizes the entire room, killing bacteria

Obviously, we’re skeptical of Sterilize X’s claims. The company claims their cheap, small ultraviolet light will kill 99% of bacteria in the “entire room” within just 30 minutes, giving you and your family medical-grade protection. Is there any evidence that Sterilize X works at all? Let’s take a closer look at the science.

Scientific Evidence for Sterilize X

The makers of Sterilize X do not cite any studies or trials verifying their claims. There’s no evidence that Sterilize X can kill any bacteria in a room – not to mention 99% of all bacteria.

However, there’s plenty of evidence that ultraviolet lights kill bacteria. Ultraviolet lights have been used in medical settings since the 1950s. UV-C radiation has been shown to kill harmful germs and bacteria at specific wavelengths.

Today, you can also find handheld UV light devices that are proven to kill bacteria. With a handheld UV light, you run the light over an infected surface to kill bacteria. Manufacturers recommend holding the light at a distance of around six inches to ensure the light is effective.

We know that UV lights work in short-distance settings. But can a UV lamp really kill 99% of bacteria in a crowded room just by placing it in a central location?

Some have suggested installing ultraviolet lamps or lights in public places – like airports. These lights could kill germs and reduce the spread of bacteria. However, the lamps have been criticized for being costly to install and ineffective against most bacteria: even high-powered ultraviolet lamps would not be able to effectively kill surface bacteria, although they may kill aerosolized bacteria.

This study published in December 2017 found that ultraviolet light was particularly effective at disabling airborne influenza viruses. Researchers aerosolized the influenza virus inside a chamber, then exposed the virus to ultraviolet light or a control. Researchers then exposed the virus to dog kidney cells susceptible to the flu. Researchers found that UV-treated virus cells could not infect the kidney cells, but untreated virus cells could.

Aside from that 2017 study, there’s limited evidence showing that ultraviolet light is safe or effective when used as a lamp or spread out over a wide area. There’s plenty of evidence showing that concentrated ultraviolet light kills bacteria when you shine the light directly on it, but there’s minimal evidence showing that a lamp is anywhere near as effective – even high-end, medical-grade devices (which Sterilize X is not).

It’s also important to note that Sterilize X is very small: the ultraviolet lights used in medical and industrial settings are very large, covering a wide surface area. Sterilize X is only about 5 inches tall.

Overall, evidence shows that Sterilize X may kill a few airborne germs around your home, especially the germs immediately surrounding the lamp. However, there’s no evidence that the lamp will “sanitize your room” or “kill 99% of bacteria” on the surfaces around the lamp.

Who’s Behind Sterilize X?

Sterilize X is sold online by a company that calls itself UAB Ekomlita. That company is based in Kaunas, Lithuania. It was founded in 2019. The company also does business under the name MUAMA Enence.

There’s limited information online about the company and who’s running it. The company appeared in a Facebook scam alert in June 2019 for selling a “universal translator” from Japan that did not actually work.

It seems UAB Ekomlita does not actually manufacture its products; instead, the company buys cheaper products from China, then resells those products online at a higher price.

Sterilize X Final Word

Sterilize X is an ultraviolet lamp that makes big promises about its effectiveness, yet seems to be backed by limited evidence. The lamp claims to sterilize an entire room, killing 99% of bacteria in the room within just 30 minutes using medical-grade technology.

In reality, Sterilize X is a tiny (5.5 inch tall), unusually expensive ultraviolet light that may kill some airborne bacteria immediately around the light but is unlikely to kill significant amounts of bacteria throughout the room – despite what the manufacturer claims.

Ultraviolet light is a proven way to kill bacteria. However, there’s no evidence that Sterilize X works as advertised – or is worth its steep price tag.
