What Is AmpliFi?

AmpliFi is a home router that recently launched online. Priced between $200 and $350, the home router system comes with a bunch of nifty features you won’t find on conventional routers – including mobile app support and a flashy LED display on the front that indicates your current speeds and traffic.

Other core features on AmpliFi routers include turbocharged 802.11AC Wi-Fi, multiple self-configuring radios, and advanced antenna technology. Together, these features can extend the range of your network and ensure you get the best speeds possible in every corner of your home. Ultimately, they also promise to deliver “home Wi-Fi, perfected”, according to the makers of AmpliFi.

AmpliFi relies on something called “mesh points” to extend wireless coverage throughout your home. You get one router and two mesh points with every purchase. However, when you spend more money, you get longer range routers.

There are three different versions of AmpliFi, including the basic AmpliFi system (with one router base station and two wireless mesh points), which costs $199.

There’s also the AmpliFi LR (Super Long Range) System that features a router with two wireless mesh points but is designed for larger homes with more expansive Wi-Fi needs. That one costs $299.

And then there’s the AmpliFi HD (High Density) priced at $349 for a router base station and two wireless mesh points to provide “maximum” Wi-Fi coverage throughout your large home.

How Do AmpliFi Routers Work?

How can one simple router have such a powerful effect on your home’s internet connection? Well, AmpliFi promises to provide enterprise-strength network capabilities with at-home simplicity. All you need to do is unbox the mesh points and plug them into a standard electrical outlet in your home.

As mentioned above, you get two mesh points in every package. These points allow you to boost your signal strength around your home.

The router and mesh points are all designed to be aesthetically pleasing. They come with a sleek white case design that won’t look out of place in any surface of your home. Meanwhile, the mesh points kind of look like remote control-shaped antennas in a plastic casing.

By placing the mesh points in strategic locations in your home, you can cover the entire home with wireless coverage. If you’ve noticed Wi-Fi coverage dropping throughout your home and you want a fast, easy, and convenient solution, then AmpliFi promises to be the router lineup for you.

After you setup the device in your home, the AmpliFi base station will tell you to go grab the app from the Google Play Store or iTunes App Store. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you can control your router entirely from that mobile device.

As you walk around the home connected to your Wi-Fi, you’ll notice your phone or tablet switch between mesh points – even without interrupting file transfers.

The main drawbacks to AmpliFi routers are that they don’t support a couple key features, including WPA2 Enterprise for 802.1X, which is a dealbreaker for some users. An ArsTechnica writer also became frustrated when he was unable to turn off DHCP with the device in router mode, although he admitted that “this isn’t going to be a problem for the vast majority of users.”

However, average home and business users are unlikely to notice these drawbacks, as the routers support virtually everything you need for average use.

I’m not going to get into all the other tech specs for the AmpliFi router. However, you can view them at the official AmpliFi website here: https://store.amplifi.com/amplifi/amplifi-96.html

The AmpliFi App

AmpliFi’s app promises to give you full control of your router from the comfort of your mobile device. Some of the core features of the app include:

  • -Setup the app in seconds
  • -Automatically update the app
  • -Track ISP and system performance
  • -Always know who is using your network

You can also do things like grant guest access from the app. When guest access is activated, you get an open time window during which guests can instantly jump onto your Wi-Fi network without sharing your password. If you’re having a party, for example, then you might open up your Wi-Fi network to guests for 3 to 4 hours.

AmpliFi Pricing

AmpliFi is launching in August 2016. Router prices listed below are the current preorder prices. Currently, you can only order AmpliFi in the United States. Here’s how pricing breaks down:

  • -Amplifi: $199
  • -Amplifi LR: $299
  • -Amplifi HD: $349

The more you pay, the more coverage your router will have. The LR and HD are designed for larger homes, while the original Amplifi is suited for medium-sized homes and smaller dwellings.

Who Makes AmpliFi?

AmpliFi is made by networking OEM Ubiquiti. The company announced AmpliFi back in May 2016. Today, the company offers a range of broadband and enterprise products, including popular enterprise products like UniFi AC.

Ubiquiti is a publically traded company under UBNT (NASDAQ). It had its IPO in 2011. The company was launched in 2005 and is based in San Jose, California. The company made headlines back in 2015 when it revealed that it had lost $46.7 million to a fraud scam.

Should You Use AmpliFi As Your Home’s Router?

Ubiquiti Labs has been around for a while providing professional networking services. Now, with AmpliFi, they aim to bring that same enterprise-level quality to the world of home networking, where AmpliFi will compete with devices like eero and Luma.

Overall, the AmpliFi lineup is highly-anticipated for its launch in August 2016. The router is easy to setup thanks to the powerful mobile apps. And, setting up the wireless mesh points around your home is as easy as plugging them into an electrical outlet. Once you’ve done that, you can ensure smooth, fast coverage around homes of virtually any size.

If you’re a home user with larger home networking needs, then AmpliFi may be the right router for you.
