ThingCharger is a charging device that promises to charge all your “things” – including smartphones, tablets, and e-readers from all different manufacturers and brands. Here’s our ThingCharger review.

What is ThingCharger?

ThingCharger is a unique type of electrical outlet cover that features a thicker base, so it sticks out further from the wall. At the top of the outlet cover is a port that lets you charge all different types of electronics.

ThingCharger doesn’t just use one port to charge all your electronics: it stores multiple charging ports in the back of the outlet cover. You stick each charging port up through the hole in the electrical cover, then place your electronic device on top for easy charging.

You can charge a phone, tablet, e-reader, music player, and other electronic devices on top of the outlet cover while still using the two electrical outlets for other electronics – so the ThingCharger never takes up an electrical outlet while it charges.

How Does It Work?

ThingCharger comes with multiple power tips. You stick different power tips up through the top of the outlet cover to charge different types of electronics. Lightning and Micro-USB charging tips are included with your ThingCharger purchase. All tips are stored neatly in the back when they’re not in use.

These power tips can be adjusted for height – so if you have a case or a uniquely-positioned electronic device, then you’ll still be able to easily charge it with ThingCharger.

The ThingCharger itself is an electrical outlet cover that consists of two electrical outlets on the back of its case. You plug those two electrical outlets into your existing outlet cover, and then the power is passed through the cover into the electronic charging port and the two conventional electrical outlets.

There are also two more USB ports on the bottom of the outlet cover, so you can potentially use five electronic devices from the same outlet simultaneously.

You can even stack multiple ThingChargers together by plugging them into each other and stacking them over top.

That means installing the ThingCharger is as easy as plugging it into your electrical outlet cover. There’s no need to unscrew your existing electrical outlet cover or modify anything in your home.

Together, these features allow the ThingCharger to charge “any phone, any tablet, any reader from any brand”, including devices from Samsung, Apple, Sony, HTC, Nokia, LG, Motorola, Kindle, Blackberry, and Nook.

ThingCharger even promises to use green technology to make it as energy efficient as possible. You know how your chargers use some power when they’re plugged in but not in use? ThingCharger eliminates this “vampire current” uses its “extraordinary new circuitry”.

ThingCharger claims it doesn’t use significantly more electricity than your conventional outlet. Here’s how the manufacturer explains it:

“thingCHARGER makes only a small difference to the load on any outlet. (Maximum 1/2 amp on your 110v outlet).”

You can safely stack three ThingChargers together before they become unstable. The back of each ThingCharger uses two prongs to connect to your electrical outlet. However, only one prong is needed for electricity. The other prong is for stability.

ThingCharger Pricing

ThingCharger is priced at a per-unit rate that goes down when you buy more units. Here’s how pricing works out:

• 4 Chargers: $119.70
• 7 Chargers: $199.50

All chargers come with two adapter tips each, including a Lightning adapter tip (to charge modern iOS devices) and micro USB adapter tips (to charge Android devices).

All ThingCharger devices are designed for the US outlet system, which features upright, double outlets in a single electrical cover. There are no international versions available, although the company claims they would like to release international versions in the future.

Who Made ThingCharger?

ThingCharger was invented by Seymour Segnit, listed as the co-founder and inventor of the company. Seymour claims he was working with an “award winning” charger one day that wobbled, had messy wires, and a host of other problems. Seymour realized he could create a superior charger – so he did.

Thanks to successful crowdfunding, ThingCharger would go on to be “the most successful crowdfunded mobile accessory of all time” according to the ThingCharger official website.

For months, the company’s chargers have been on backorder, and you still need to wait a few weeks to get a ThingCharger to this day.
