What is Pogojet?

Pogojet is a non-lethal weapon that goes by the official name of “Caseless Telescoping Less-lethal System”. Obviously, Pogojet is a catchier name.

The innovative new weapon claims to stop a target in its tracks from 100 meters away without harming them. It was created by Jeffrey Widder, a senior research scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute in Ohio.

It’s one of several new weapon technologies on the market being called “smart guns” or “smart bullets”. It promises to be a highly-accurate, safe, and portable type of non-lethal weapon that relies on advanced laser guiding systems and other modern weapons technologies.

How Does Pogojet Work?

The unique thing about Pogojet is that the propellant burns inside the round, pushing on the piston that propels it forward. This action is similar to a pogostick, which is where the name Pogojet comes from.

Meanwhile, once the propellant runs out, the exhaust can be vented sideways to ensure the bullet continues traveling forward at the same speed. Or, the round can be directed out of the back of the round to push it forward – which is where the “jet” part of the name comes from.

The goal of Pogojet is to hit the target at a sweet spot between 77 and 87 meters per second. To do that, Pogojet uses a .50 caliber weapon firing a hard projectile, with the above gas venting technology used to hit the target at the perfect velocity.

This variable velocity technology is important: it means that the Pogojet can be safe to use (non lethal) at short distances while still being effective at longer distances.

That’s a huge improvement over, say, rubber bullets. Traditional non-lethal weaponry used by police often travels a shorter distance than a rock thrown by a human – which is a problem when you’re dealing with rioters.

Pogojet also uses a laser rangefinder – similar to the technology used in military grenade launchers. This rangefinder will connect with the gun to ensure that the target velocity is being met.

The Pogojet is actually semi-automatic by nature, which means it fires more quickly than conventional non-lethal weapons.

Does It Hurt?

Pogojet is described as a non-lethal or less-than-lethal weapon. Just like with most non-lethal projectiles, there’s the potential for danger if the weapon hits the eyes or mouth. However, on all other parts of the body, the projectile won’t feel much harder than a bee sting. The sensation is described as follows:

“It’s like a bee sting. It’ s only over a small area, but it is intense enough to be effective.”

Another key advantage of the Pogojet is that it’s highly accurate, which means it can be aimed at a less sensitive part of the body more easily than conventional non-lethal weapons. By aiming for the torso, police forces can stop a target in its tracks without significantly harming the individual.

Uses for Pogojet

Pogojet’s creator envisions the weapon as an attachment used with traditional law enforcement weapons – like AR15s and M4s. In one promotional image for Pogojet, the weapon is seen attached under the barrel of an M4.

Currently In Development

There’s a prototype of Pogojet available. It looks like a small pistol. Widder uploaded a video of him firing the weapon online, although that video has since been removed.
