Pocket Power Plus Review

Pocket Power Plus is a book-sized device that weighs one pound and promises to run all of your electronic devices while also helping to jumpstart vehicles. Here’s our Pocket Power Plus review.

What is Pocket Power Plus?

Pocket Power Plus calls itself a pocket-sized device that “lets you create your own personal “Micro-Grid””. The device weighs one pound and is priced at around $120.

The device features 16 different types of adapters, which means you can charge just about any of your electronic adapters using it.

There’s also jumper cables included with your purchase, which means you can jumpstart a vehicle if you’re away from a power source. You can also use them on USB-charged tactical flashlights which are rising in popularity.

The product is endorsed by Glenn Beck, who has gone on record stating that “Every American family should have at least three Pocket Power Pluses.”

Of course, Glenn Beck is the same guy who believes that if you log onto a certain website, the American government will secretly gain access to everything in your home – so I’m not sure if his endorsement is a good or bad thing.

How Does Pocket Power Plus Work?

Pocket Power Plus claims to use a polymer lithium ion battery to provide its power.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer never mentions how big that battery is, which makes it difficult to determine how much power the device outputs. We also don’t know anything about its wattage, amperage, or voltage – things that are really important when you’re comparing the batteries in portable chargers.

Nevertheless, the manufacturer claims you can charge any device using one of the 18 different adapters (including a USB adapter).

An iPad, for example, will run for 18 hours after being charged with the Pocket Power Plus. A Kindle will run for 32 hours, and an iPhone will run for 64 hours.

Amazingly, the device even claims to double your laptop’s battery run time – something that is physically impossible.

Although the device claims to fit into your pocket, it’s a little larger than that. It does weigh just one pound, but it’s about six inches long, four inches wide, and an inch thick, or about the size of a medium-sized block of cheese.

In other words, you need really big pockets if you call this device “pocket-sized”.

Can It Really Jumpstart a Vehicle?

Pocket Power Plus claims that it can easily jumpstart virtually any vehicle, including a motorcycle, car, truck, or even a bus.

As a real life example, Pocket Power Plus explains that one skeptical engineer took the device home in an effort to restart his Harley after months of inactivity. The Harley fired up within the first few cranks after being jumpstarted by Pocket Power Plus – even though the high-compression engines in Harleys are notoriously hard to turn over.

The manufacturer hasn’t published a video of the Pocket Power Plus actually starting a vehicle. However, a video posted online showed customers using a Pocket Power Plus to jumpstart their vehicle. You can view that video here.

Other than that video, there’s no evidence that the device can actually jumpstart a car.

Pocket Power Plus Versus Other Portable Chargers

Portable chargers are a dime a dozen these days, and you can buy all sorts of different portable power chargers online at a fraction of the price of Pocket Power Plus.

A quick look at Best Buy’s catalog, for example, shows us a wide range of options comparable to the Pocket Power Plus for as little as $4.99.

One of the most expensive portable chargers is the EnerPlex generator, which also uses a lithium ion battery (like Pocket Power Plus) and features 38 watts of power while wearing 2 pounds. It’s priced at $349.99.

In the mid-range, we have devices like the Mophie Powerstation XL External Battery Pack Charger, which features a 12,000 mAh battery at a price of $129.99.

At the very cheapest range, you can buy a portable charger capable of fully charging your phone for as little as $4.99 on clearance.

Since Pocket Power Plus doesn’t list its tech specs online, it’s impossible to compare it to other devices on the market. Typically, when a manufacturer calls their portable charger powerful, they want to back up that claim with raw technical data. Since Pocket Power Plus hasn’t done this, we’re led to believe it has a small battery, putting it in the mid to low range of portable chargers.
