What is a Mophie Powerstation?

A Mophie Powerstation is a portable charging device that uses USB to charge any of your electronic devices. If your electronic device has a USB charging port, then you can charge it using one of the Mophie Powerstations.

Mophie separates its product lineup into different levels and sizes based on how many times it can charge an average smartphone: the cheapest Powerstations are 1X chargers, for example. The company also sells 2X, 3X, 5X, and 8X chargers.

Powerstations start at $34.95 and can be purchased online through Mophie.com or through major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.

The smaller Powerstations (the 1X chargers) are surprisingly small – about the size of a USB thumb drive. As the charging capacity increases, the chargers grow in size to about the size of a small paperback book.

You can charge pretty much anything using the Powerstation, including any electronic device with a USB input. That includes tablets, smartphones, cameras, headphones, gamepads, smart watches, and many other electronics.

How Does a Mophie Powerstation Work?

A Mophie Powerstation uses 1.8A output and Mophie’s smart adaptive charging technology to identify your connected device and deliver the fastest, most efficient charging speeds available.

You use a USB Cable to connect your Powerstation to your device – just like you would normally charge it.

Powerstations come in a variety of different colors, so you can customize your charger to match your phone or whatever your color preferences may be.

The smaller Powerstations are quite small, about the size of a USB thumb drive. However, even the larger Powerstations are small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag. They’re designed to be carried with you on-the-go.

An LED status indicator on the Mophie Powerstation tells you the charge status of the device. Once the charge on your Powerstation runs out, you’ll need to recharge it using its own USB cable.

Mophie also claims to use something called Charge Vault technology, which enables the company’s products to hold a charge for an extended period of time – something Mophie claims it does more effectively than any other charger on the market.

When a product is labeled as a “1X” charger, it means that it can charge an average smartphone – Mophie uses an iPhone 6 as an example – from 0 to 100%.

The Powerstations don’t have an unlimited number of recharges: Mophie claims their Powerstations will last for about 500 complete charges. After about 500 full cycles, your battery may provide less than 75% of its original capacity, which is something we typically see with a lithium polymer battery. Just be aware that your Mophie Powerstation won’t last forever.

A full charge, by the way, is measured as going from 0 to 100%. So if you only charge from 0 to 25% one day, and then charge from 25% to 100% a few days later, then that counts as a full 100% charge. Your partial charges will not count until they add up to a full 100% charge.
