HR 300 Titan Shovel Review

The HR 300 Titan claims to be “the sexiest shovel in the world.” The multifunctional tool promises to help you perform a wide range of tasks outdoors – from digging holes to sawing wood. Here’s our much-anticipated HR 300 Titan review.

What Is The HR 300 Titan?

The HR 300 Titan is a shovel made by American survival gear company Survival Life. The company claims it’s the sexiest shovel in the world and “the last tool you’ll ever need.”

It comes with multiple functions that make it ideal for camping or outdoor survival situations. You can dig holes like an ordinary shovel. The side of the shovel is serrated to act like a saw or axe for chopping wood. You can also set it up like a hunting trap. There’s even a light hidden in the shovel.

The HR 300 Titan also comes with a modular design that can easily break down into its different parts for easy storage.

Survival Life’s Chief Editor, Joe Marshall, claims the HR 300 Titan was inspired by his grandfather’s old entrenching shovel. That shovel was designed for military use – like digging trenches. Joe decided to improve on the classic entrenching shovel design and make his own twist.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the HR 300 Titan features.

HR 300 Titan Features

The HR 300 Titan has 19 different functions in total. Some of those are obvious – like digging holes or gardening. Others, however, are less obvious – like storing rope or guiding your way with a light. Here are all of the different features you’ll find in this shovel:

-Serrated edge that “can take down just about any firewood”

-300 lumen HYBEAM Tactical light with a CREE bulb and a built-in rechargeable lithium battery. The bulb has a strobe and SOS function as well as a bright white light for use as a camp lantern or a red light to use as an emergency beacon.

-Rare earth (neodymium) magnet that gives you hands-free use of the flashlight while working on your car or around any metal surface (it sticks to metal)

-Ferro rod that “is twice as thick as normal Ferro rods”. That rod strikes at 3000 degrees. Survival Life guarantees you’ll get 30,000 strikes “so you can get a fire going no matter what.”

-Combination mini-saw and knife concealed within the shovel.

-10 feet of paracord that can be broken down into individual strands to give you 100 total feet of cordage for sewing, fishing, suturing, setting traps and snares, and more.

-Gardening hoe to turn soil and clear weeds (the end of the shovel rotates down at a 90 degree angle to create a hoe).

-Built-in ruler for measuring

-Scissors for cutting cordage down to size.

-Included screwdriver with Philips and flathead attachments.

-Emergency tourniquet for first aid situations.

-120dB whistle to alert emergency personnel in rescue situations.

-A hammer to help you pound in tent pegs

-Bottle opener

Joe actually claims that he’s working on new modules all the time so he can add new attachments to the HR 300 Titan. Some of those new attachments include a fishing kid, a first aid kit, and a fire-starting kit.

Ultimately, all of these features together make the Titan “the next generation of survival tools”, claims the product packaging and sales copy. Joe claims you would need a wheelbarrow to haul all of these separate components. Today, they’re conveniently stacked into one shovel.

What’s It Made From?

The HR 300 Titan is made from “aircraft grade aluminum” and 440C stainless steel.

Aircraft grade aluminum is one of the biggest buzzwords in the online marketing industry these days. The same aluminum alloy used on airplanes is the one you also see on golf clubs and bicycle spokes. Saying the shovel uses “bicycle spoke aluminum”, however, isn’t as sexy.

The 440C stainless steel, on the other hand, is a 400 series stainless steel. The 440C indicates that it has the highest carbon content of any 400 series stainless steel. To make 440C stainless steel, it needs to be heat treated to reach a higher level of hardness. You’ll typically see this type of steel in roller bearings and knife blades.

HR 300 Titan Pricing

The HR 300 Titan is priced at $149.95.

You can purchase the shovel online through SurvivalLife.com. Shipping anywhere in America, Canada, Australia, or the UK is included in that price.

Who Makes the HR 300 Titan?

The HR 300 Titan is sold online by the team at Survival Life, where it was designed by Joe Marshall. However, the shovel itself is made by a company named Hoffman-Richter (that’s where the “HR” in the name comes from).

Hoffman-Richter has partnered with Survival Life in the past to make the Everstryke survival match and a folding knife. That knife, by the way, was also made from 440C stainless steel.

That knife has plenty of good reviews on Amazon, where its average rating is over 4 stars. Overall, Hoffman-Richter appears to maintain a good standard of quality.

One of the funny things about Hoffman-Richter is that it appears to be a subsidiary company of Survival Life. The two companies share the same address and the Survival Life logo is found all over the Hoffman-Richter page. That address, by the way, is:

4330 Gaines Ranch Rd.
Suite 120
Austin TX, 78735

You can call the company (either one) at 512-366-3332.

Other popular Survival Life products include canned meat and long-term food storage, lighters, knives, a pepper spray/stun gun combo, survival watches, and backpacks. Whether you’re going camping for a week in the woods or you’re preparing for a survival situation, Survival Life promises to equip you with the tools you need.

Should the HR 300 Titan Be Your Next Survival Tool?

The HR 300 Titan is a small shovel that comes with a wide variety of functions. It may not be the right choice if you plan on digging a hole all day. However, if you’re looking for a multifunctional tool that can perform admirably in multiple situations and be outfitted with multiple modules, then this might be the shovel for you.

One of the nice things about the HR 300 Titan is that it comes with a full refund. So if you get the shovel and you don’t think it’s a high level of quality, or if you don’t like it, then you can return it for a full refund. That’s a guarantee we don’t always see with survival gear. For these reasons and more, the HR 300 Titan may be a good way to prepare yourself for camping or survival situations.
