0

BuzzBGone is an insect zapper that claims to attract, trap, and kill flying insects.

Priced at $40 per unit, BuzzBGone may defend your home against mosquitoes and other insects using ultraviolet light. It uses UV light to attract insects and a 360-degree suction fan to capture them.

Does BuzzBGone work as advertised to kill insects? How does BuzzBGone work? Today, we’re explaining everything you need to know about BuzzBGone and how it works.

What is BuzzBGone?

BuzzBGone is an insect zapper that uses a two-phase system to kill insects.

First, BuzzBGone uses an ultraviolet (UV) light to attract insects. Then, BuzzBGone uses a 360-degree fan to suck insects in. The device claims to kill insects without using chemicals, making it safe to use around children and pets.

Also known as Buzz B-Gone, the insect zapper is exclusively sold online through BuzzBGone.com. Each zapper is priced at $30 to $40, depending on how many zappers you buy.

BuzzBGone is being marketed to parents online as part of a recent campaign. One sales page features a parent who “could not stand the sight” of his little girl covered in mosquito bites. His neighbor recommended BuzzBGone to fight back against insects. He installed multiple BuzzBGone devices around his home, then woke up to find “thousands” of dead insects in the devices.

It’s a nice story – but how does BuzzBGone actually work? Let’s take a closer look at this unique insect killer.

How Does BuzzBGone Work?

BuzzBGone combines ultraviolet (UV) light with a suction fan. BuzzBGone uses UV light to attract insects. The insects are drawn to the device. Then, once they get within a certain range, a fan sucks insects in, killing them without the use of chemicals.

The maker of BuzzBGone claims their device can “kill thousands of mosquitoes” by pulling them into “an inescapable vortex”.

BuzzBGone is a small, futuristic-looking device. It’s portable, although the device must be plugged in at all times to work. You cannot plug BuzzBGone into an electrical outlet: you can only plug it in via USB.

After the mosquitoes are sucked into the vortex, they’re propelled to the bottom of BuzzBGone. The mosquitoes cannot escape from the vortex, and they’re constantly forced to the bottom of the fan.

Eventually, the trap becomes filled with dead mosquitoes. You empty the dead mosquitoes, then run the fan again when needed.

Although BuzzBGone is marketed for outdoor use (like camping), the device is not as portable as advertised. You need a USB port to run the device. You cannot charge it and let it run: you need a constant USB power supply. You can use a USB power bank or laptop to run BuzzBGone wherever you go.

With BuzzBGone, there’s no need for chemicals, replacement filters, or other items.

BuzzBGone Features & Benefits

The makers of BuzzBGone advertise all of the following features and benefits:

  • Eliminate thousands of mosquitoes overnight
  • Ultraviolet light for insect attraction
  • 360-degree suction fan
  • Kills insects without the use of chemicals
  • Powered by USB
  • Small and portable

Does BuzzBGone Really Work?

It’s true that a fan can suck mosquitoes into a device, which kills or traps the mosquitoes. BuzzBGone does not contain a high-powered fan (again, it’s powered by USB – not a conventional electrical outlet). However, the small fan may be enough to suck in mosquitoes that fly very close nearby.

BuzzBGone claims mosquitoes fly close by because they’re attracted to ultraviolet light. The top of BuzzBGone contains ultraviolet lights. Mosquitoes fly towards these lights, then get trapped inside the fan.

According to one review, mosquitoes “ignore” any humans nearby, gravitating towards the ultraviolet light instead.

Most insect zappers do not use ultraviolet light. Most insect zappers use scents or electricity to kill mosquitoes. So are mosquitoes really attracted to ultraviolet light? Will BuzzBGone really draw mosquitoes into its fan?

Evidence shows that mosquitoes may not be attracted to ultraviolet light, even though many bug zappers use ultraviolet light.

In a report, How It Works claims that “mosquitoes are not attracted to ultraviolet light in the way that many other insects are, making the usual type of bug zapper almost useless in getting rid of them.”

As proof, How It Works cites a report by University of Delaware researchers, who checked through 14,000 insects in six zappers. Only 31 of the 14,000 insects were biting gnats or mosquitoes, suggesting that ultraviolet lights aren’t effective for attracting mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes find their blood meals by following heat and carbon dioxide trails. It’s possible that ultraviolet lights emit some heat, which could attract mosquitoes. However, ultraviolet lights do not emit carbon dioxide. Based on the research above, mosquitoes do not seem attracted to ultraviolet lights. However, it’s possible other insects are attracted to ultraviolet light.

Overall, BuzzBGone is marketed mostly as a mosquito zapper, although mosquitoes seem to be one of the few insects that are not attracted to ultraviolet light. Nevertheless, it’s possible BuzzBGone could attract and kill other insects.

BuzzBGone Final Word

BuzzBGone markets itself as an insect zapper, although the device does not technically zap insects with electricity. Instead, BuzzBGone attracts insects with ultraviolet light, then sucks insects into a chamber using a fan.

BuzzBGone isn’t very powerful. It uses a USB cord for electricity instead of a standard electrical cord, which could make the device difficult to use on a patio or other outdoor setting. You need a USB port to plug the device in. Furthermore, BuzzBGone markets itself primarily as a mosquito killer, yet there’s no evidence mosquitoes are attracted to ultraviolet light (although other insects seem to be).

The lack of a refund policy is also concerning. If you’re unhappy with BuzzBGone or unsatisfied with its insect killing capabilities, you cannot return BuzzBGone for a complete refund. You can only return unopened, unused products.

For all of these reasons, you should be able to find a better bug zapper at this price range.
